TRAVELLING HOMESCHOOL TEACHER

We place qualified teachers with private families full-time, in the family residence and on the road. Many of our teachers stay with the same household for years, teaching through the school year from home. Others are engaged specifically to travel, and it is a service in its own right.

A Travelling Teacher accompanies the family for a gap year, a sabbatical or a season of continuous travel, and delivers a full curriculum on the move. Structured academics continue to a set timetable, while the destinations themselves become part of the teaching: museums, historical sites, nature and sport in the countries the family is passing through. Our teachers have travelled with families through Europe and Asia, across the United States, on extended stays in Africa and South America, and on board privately owned yachts.

A Travelling Teacher is a qualified teacher holding QTS, a PGCE or state licensure, with the confidence to run a child’s education independently for a year at a time. We place across the British National Curriculum, IGCSE, A Level and the IB, and across the American curriculum and Advanced Placement, including preparation for a return to school at the end of the year. Our teachers are primarily English mother tongue (EMT), and we also provide Italian, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Russian and Portuguese speakers, which many families choose so that a second language is learned in the country where it is spoken.

United Kingdom: salaries start at £70,000 gross per year, approximately £1350 gross per week, and rise to £130,000 gross per year in accordance with qualifications/experience and previous salaries acquired. Accommodation, travel and all costs on the road to be provided by the family.

United States: salaries start at $150,000 gross per year and rise to $250,000 gross per year for a full-time, sole-charge position.

Year-long travelling appointments sit towards the upper end of both bands, reflecting the continuous nature of the role and the level of independence required.

Where children are at different stages, families often engage two Travelling Teachers with complementary subject specialisms, so that a six-year-old and an eleven-year-old are each taught properly on the same itinerary. This may be two teachers who have worked alongside one another before, or a couple who travel and teach as a pair. Each is engaged on their own package within the bands above, and accommodation is arranged to suit whichever the family chooses.
